The History of J.W. Mettrick & Son Ltd
J W Mettrick & Son Ltd began with George Woolley's original shop at Hadfield in the 1890s. George was known locally as "The B&B" (Bookie Butcher). Going into business with his nephew Jack Woolley Mettrick in 1903, the business name changed to J W Mettrick. Jack's son James came into the business, which then became J W Mettrick & Son. Family has always been very important - as can be seen from the name changes in the business - and J W Mettrick & Son Ltd has been family-owned for over one hundred and ten years. In fact, the shops are now run by the fifth generation of the family, as you can see from the tree below. Today's modern business operates three shops and an abattoir in North Derbyshire, and an online shop. It employs over 50 staff including 5 members of the family. ![]() *At the time of writing, these individuals all currently work in the business.
