Mettrick’s Football Pie

June 3rd, 2010
John Mettrick and Wendy RimmerThe World Cup season is upon us, and Mettrick’s is already celebrating a victory. The right to claim best grub at a football stadium is always fiercely debated, but now we finally have the answer.

While the England team may be waiting until July 11th to get their hands on the trophy in South Africa; Mettrick’s butchers, in association with Glossop North End football club, have scooped the prize of Best Football Pie courtesy of the Colman’s British Pie Awards held in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire.

The steak and potato pie represented The Hillmen against 36 of the countries biggest clubs including the likes of newly promoted Newcastle United. While the Surrey Street club may be eight divisions below England’s top flight, they still know how to cause an upset or two. The giant killing pie stole a march on Premier League opponents Liverpool and Everton, and ran rings around the steak and ale pie of Scotland’s Glasgow Celtic.

Not content with one prize, Mettrick’s also won bronzes for Best Pork Pie and Best Cold Savoury Pie. A hat-trick some might say.

Despite being exclusive to Glossop NE, the pie is available to buy online.

Mettrick’s High Peak Lamb

May 27th, 2010

FarmThe award-winning butchers JW Mettrick & Son are so passionate about the high quality of their lamb that they go the extra mile to ensure each piece of meat tastes just as delicious as the last.

What sets Mettrick’s apart from supermarket brands is how much more flavour is condensed into the lamb and the sensational aroma that fills the nostrils. The difference in taste is clear and the authenticity of the meat is apparent with every bite. Nowhere else can offer such great value.

 EQM logo

Two accreditation systems certify only the best lamb is suitable for sale and no shortcuts are made. This independent scale measures the quality and care only available at this level of farming. The Peak District Environmental Quality Mark is achieved thanks to supporting the finest environmental practices; minimising waste and using locally produced services. It also supports the efficient use of energy and water resources and the conservation of characteristic features such as wildflower meadows or habitats. The High Peak Lamb Quality Scheme assesses individual lambs for their weight, fat content and maturation.

Analysing these aspects makes certain that all the lamb is lean and a reasonable size for chops and joints. To find out more about the EQM or Quality Scheme, visit: www.peakdistrict.org

The High Peak Lamb brand is regarded so highly because of the High Peak Lambattention to precision from each butcher; no machines are used in the process, and only the handiwork of skilled craftsmen will do. Only a select few farms have the distinction to supply our lamb, and not every lamb will meet the required prestige Mettrick’s aims for. Mettrick’s possesses one of the very few abattoirs in Derbyshire, just a short journey away, keeping the animals calm and stress free. The small scale abattoir guarantees the best animal care and enhances the delectable flavour that is provided by the heather and herbs of the district.

The wide varieties of lamb on offer range from mince, ideal for a shepherds pie, to tender steaks or burgers that just melt in the mouth. The minty grill steaks provide a practical, easy to prepare option and legs of lamb are ever popular for a Sunday dinner. There are so many possibilities to choose from; the only deciding factor… is you.

J.W. Mettrick & Son have picked up a prestigious award for their Mutton Cutlets.

At the recent North West Fine Food Awards 2009, Mettricks emerged triumphant as category champion for ‘Best Fresh Meat Product (North West)’.

John Mettrick said: “We’re absolutely over the moon to win this award. We think this is a great product and with the award behind it, it will hopefully be a great success. Most importantly, the award serves as recognition for everybody involved in our supply chain from the farmer, through to the slaughtermen and the butchers – everyone has had a hand in its production from farm to plate. The award will give the staff a real lift and serve as a great motivation for us to continue to strive to make great products.”
