British Turkey Butcher of the Year 2006

JW Mettrick & Son of Glossop have won the award for "Britain's Best Turkey Butcher". Mettricks beat off strong competition particularly from London Butchers to win the award at Claridges in London. John Mettrick and Adam Gray were presented with the award by Kim Burgess and the comedian Brian Conley. Judges commented on Mettricks sourcing their turkeys locally and selling a wide range of different turkeys and turkey products.

"I have been purchasing turkeys from you as long as I can remember, both at Christmas and Easter and also at other times during the year. The quality of your turkeys is excellent, extremely tasty and very good value for money. Over the years we have bought large 16lb+ turkeys and also turkey breast roasts and have never been disappointed in the quality. It is also good to know that your turkeys have low food miles and so are helping the local economy."
Mrs Pat Kinder, Glossop - 14th July 2006

  • CURRIED MUTTON KEBABS - GOLD AWARD
  • POLISH PORK PINWHEEL - GOLD AWARD
  • CLASSIC BEEFBURGER - SILVER AWARD
"Jerky Turkey - everyone's favourite, went straight on the BBQ and sizzled on an iron griddle equally well. My husband was moved to say it was the most moist and 'interesting' turkey he'd ever had, and we were all pleasantly surprised by how hot it was. In general we eat quite highly spiced Indian and Caribbean food and find commercial products quite bland, but this had a pleasant level of heat, a good depth to the spicing, a definite winner and very easy to cook."
Fiona Jerome, Food writer at The Independent.

"Mettricks deserve enormous credit. It was enlightening to see the imagination that has gone into the production and presentation of their exciting barbecue ideas."
Franco Taruschio, award-winning chef, TV presenter and former proprietor of the internationally renowned Walnut Tree in Abergavenny, Wales

"Smell raw was wonderful and looks natural and homemade - great balance of flavours and steak was beautifully cooked."
From the judging sheet at the National BBQ Championships where Mettrick's Jerky Turkey steaks had the highest possible marks with no deductions in any of the eight criteria sections.
