A Focus on Locally Produced Food is Nothing New to Mettrick's | | | | In these days when food sources are becoming more and more important to consumers, it is good to know that it has always been a top priority for us at JW Mettrick's Butchers. This is borne out by our longest serving supplier Mr M W Evans, who has been supplying top quality beef to us for over 70 years. Mr Evans pictured here among his herd with Steven Mettrick who runs J W Mettrick's Abattoir in Glossop. The animals from the herd pictured here are destined for Mettricks shop in September. |

"The mutton shoulder was exceptional. This comes from, as does all the fresh meat, Mettricks in Glossop. You may have heard of this place, it's probably the region's best-known family butcher, with flocks of sheep and herds of cattle on the high hills, its own abattoir in the town and an obsessive owner. John Mettrick is on the phone all the time to Booth asking him what he thought of the flesh he's supplied. Well, John, you madman, if you're reading this congrats on the mutton." - Manchester Confidential | |

Mettrick's Win Good Houskeeping Best On-line Butcher Award | | | | At an star studded awards ceremony in London last night, JW Mettricks & Son were voted "Best On-Line Butcher" by Good Housekeeping Magazine. The judging panel including celebrity chef Valentine Warner, Jane Asher and Good Housekeeping Food Consultant Prue Leith, cited "The good range on offer and the fact that sausages are made on the premises with locally sourced meat" as two of the reasons for selecting Mettrick's for the award. Enjo launches into Glossop and helps Mettricks go cleaner & greener! Local, award-winning butcher, JW Mettrick & Son has become an early local role model in eliminating the harmful cleaning chemicals from its Glossop & Hadfield shops. It has done this with the help of another award-winner, the Austrian eco cleaning company called ENJO (pronounced en-yo), which has recently launched its eco-friendly fibre based cleaning system into Glossop. The ENJO products use a unique, scientifically-proven fibre technology to clean without the need for chemicals and using cold water only. And unlike many environmentally friendly products on the market, the ENJO products actually give better cleaning results than the chemical alternatives - tests by the Austrian government have proved the ENJO fibres clean 6.5 times better than traditional chemical methods. John Mettrick, owner of JW Mettrick & Son, and his cleaning staff were initially sceptical when they were approached by ENJO about their revolutionary cleaning system. However, having seen the system in action, John decided to introduce the products and was both surprised and impressed with the results. As John says: "We now do not have the annoying smearing that you can get with chemical cleaners and whatever we have used it on just looks better and better. Now we are also using the system on our resin and tiled floors with good results." Mettricks has always strived to reduce its environmental impact and has implemented various procedures to achieve this which has meant that Mettricks has been awarded the Environmental Quality Mark. Switching over to a non-chemical cleaning solution was the obvious next step in an age when concerns for the environment, both locally and globally, are increasing. John had this to say: "I would definitely recommend giving ENJO's products a try as it is very unusual to find a product that is good for both the pocket and the environment. ENJO has made a valuable contribution to our environmental credentials as our business is built around the supply of local meat with low food miles and now low chemical usage."

| | Mettricks are OVERALL WINNERS in the best fresh meat category of the North West Fine Food Awards 2008 On the 13th March, at a glittering awards evening at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel in Blackburn, Mettricks scooped the award for the Best Fresh Meat in the North West with their Glossop Goat Cutlets, beating off competition from more conventional meats including beef, pork and poultry. A surprised, but delighted, John Mettrick said that he hoped the award would provide a spring board for increased sales of goat. Goat meat is low in cholesterol, high in iron and has less fat than chicken - ticking many boxes for todays health-conscious consumers. | | Why not try goat curry or goat stew for a change? Mettricks sell cut-up meat, on-the-bone meat and goat for grilling and roasting, with slow and low being the key to good cooking. Request Mettricks Goat Cutlets |
