John Mettrick said: “We’re absolutely over the moon to win this award. We think this is a great product and with the award behind it, it will hopefully be a great success. Most importantly, the award serves as recognition for everybody involved in our supply chain from the farmer, through to the slaughtermen and the butchers – everyone has had a hand in its production from farm to plate. Mr W H Evans & Steven Mettrick among the Evans Herd on Angelsey
In these days when food sources are becoming more and more important to consumers, it is good to know that it has always been a top priority for us at JW Mettrick’ Butchers.
This is borne out by our longest serving supplier Mr M W Evans, who has been supplying top quality beef to us for over 70 years.

The animals from the herd pictured here are destined for Mettricks shop in September.
We believe that it is important for people to know and understand the meat they buy. To help this, we have added a new video area to the website, where John will help you understand where the meat you buy comes from, and will explain how to make the most of different cuts.
Take a look at the first videos, which feature John preparing an Award Winning High Peak Spring Lamb, and tell us what you think.
If you like them, we will be adding more video in the future.
A ‘Beef and Horseradish Sausage’ created by local butcher J.W. Mettrick & Son has picked up a prestigious award.
The Glossop butcher emerged triumphant as a category champion at the North West BPEX Roadshow and Product Evaluation Event for butchers, which drew in a staggering 344 product entries from 67 butchers.
The sausage, based on a brand new recipe, not only delivered on taste and texture but its spin on a classic Sunday roast dinner proved to be a hit with the judges. As well as scooping the lamb or beef sausage category, Mettrick’s also picked up nine gold awards, five silvers and a bronze award for other products entered.
John Mettrick, a fifth generation butcher and proprietor of JW Mettrick & Son, was pleased with the results. He said: “Considering this was one of the toughest roadshows to date I think we did pretty well! The standard of entries was amazing and as this sausage is a new product it makes our success even more satisfying. Most of the team were involved in preparing the products for entry so they are all over the moon.
“The Beef & Horseradish Sausage is one I created with our apprentice butcher, James. I came up with the recipe and James finished them in their skins. It was quite tricky to make sure we had the right amount of horseradish as it can be quite an acquired taste. But we made a few sample batches and the team tried them out – we didn’t want to blow anyone’s head off! But the mixture seems to be perfect now so we’ll be adding it to our collection of sausages in the very near future.
“All of our products are truly authentic and home-made. Our farmers are very local to us and we have been working with them for a number of years. We have our own abattoir and processing plant plus we have two shops and our products can be bought online via our website as well. My brother and I are very proud to be able to keep our long-established family business, which opened over 100 years ago, running and progressing in a tough market.”
